Acupuncture in animals
Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body to produce physiological responses that result in a healing effect.
In recent times extensive research has revealed much of the scientific basis behind the success of acupuncture therapy.
The main application for acupuncture is for pain relief. It can be used alongside conventional therapies or as an alternative where drug intolerance or incompatibility occurs.
Both dogs and cats and even birds can benefit. The commonest indications are osteoarthritis, muscle injuries, myofascial trigger points, spinal disease, feline cystitis and some chronic gastro-enteric problems.
A typical treatment involves the placing of varying numbers of needles that are left in place for between ten and twenty minutes. Sometimes a tiny, painless, electrical current is applied to enhance the required effect of the needles. Treatments are usually once a week to start with, then at longer intervals according to progress.
Most animals accept the needles well and often fall asleep during the procedure.
There is little risk from acupuncture when performed by a trained practitioner.
Acupuncture is always worth considering for conditions that fail to respond satisfactorily to conventional approaches and at times it achieves results when other treatments have failed.
