Internal Medicine

Internal medicine clinicians are dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of a wide array of diseases affecting companion animals. Internal medicine veterinarians are sometimes referred to as the "doctor's doctor," because as postgraduate trained consultants, they are called upon to help find the solutions to puzzling diagnostic problems. We examine a great variety of complex multi-system disorders in dogs and cats, and common examples would include chronic gastro-intestinal problems, unexplained recurrent fever or infections, hormone system abnormalities, respiratory tract problems and abdominal diseases as well as cancer diagnosis and treatment.

After an initial consultation, a patient will often be admitted for further investigations such as blood tests, radiographs, ultrasound, MRI (magnetic resonance imaging)or CT (computed tomography) scans, endoscopy or biopsies. Often, in the best interests of your pet, investigations may need to be staged - but we always try to minimize the inconvenience to your schedule by booking an appointment with likely further investigations in mind. After these tests, some patients may return home (the same day or next day) whilst awaiting test results, and others may need to be hospitalised for additional treatment, according to how unwell they are.

If you are coming to see one of the internal medicine clinicians at North Kent Referrals we will discuss with you the options available to best investigate and treat your pet's medical problems.
